The ticker to the right side of this page keeps us all informed of the stable’s progress. The “Race to 50” appeared last year, it wasn’t my idea (it wasn’t even my goal) but I was out-voted and it became a live element on the site. We almost made it in 2011, winding up with 43 wins. I like to think the seven stakes wins make up the difference.
This year, the account is already at nine. Not bad, as of February 10. But, as we’ve learned, the wins come easier in the winter. Nine in January and February can sometimes equate to 3 in July and August. But, at least, we’re off to a strong start in 2012.
Red’s Round Table secured an easy allowance win, that was logical, expected. Unfortunately, Sheldon Russell had days and couldn’t ride her. Fortunately, we picked veteran up Mario Pino, who moved into 12th on the all-time win list. He came back and looked at me with a smile, “That was fun.” Sure was. She goes for her biggest test, the Grade II Barbara Fritchie on February 18. As for Pino, he’s still winning races and making friends – not an easy feat in this game.
Unbridled Pride taking a claimer in early January was to be honest, relatively expected. When she came back to win an allowance race last week, well, that was rewarding to say the least. She’s won four in a row now. We’re a long way from Rapid Redux, but we’ll take it. There is nothing like watching a horse gain confidence and get on a roll.
Strangerinthenight provided another rewarding win from a horse who had some bumps along the road. Awesome to see him turn around and win an allowance race.
Fingersnapper, Promessa Doce, Harbor Lynx, Awesome Flower and Derwin’s Wildcat supplied the others. All needed, all appreciated. Nine down, 41 to go. But, remember, I’ve never been a numbers’ guy.
Nine . . . but who's Counting?
